🌿 Broad Leaf Chain Sword – Spreading Foreground Plant for Soil-Based Tanks

Broad Leaf Chain Sword (Echinodorus quadricostatus or similar spp.) is a fast-spreading, rooted aquarium plant with broader leaves than its narrowleaf cousin. It creates a lush, grassy carpet effect in the foreground or midground β€” without COβ‚‚, root tabs, or bottled fertilizers.

Ideal for Father Fish–style aquariums with deep soil and a sand cap, this sword sends out runners that form clusters of foliage perfect for shrimp, fry, and bottom dwellers.

πŸ’š Why Choose Broad Leaf Chain Sword?

βœ… Wider Grass-Like Leaves – Great for visual texture in foreground layouts
βœ… Natural Runner Growth – Propagates quickly in healthy, dirted substrate
βœ… Low-Tech Compatible – Grows well with just soil and light
βœ… Shrimp & Fry Safe – Gentle leaves and dense growth offer cover and security
βœ… No Bottled Additives Needed – Naturally grown without synthetic fertilizers

πŸͺ΄ Plant Care Tips:

Lighting: Moderate (stronger light = faster spread)
COβ‚‚: Not required
Substrate: Deep soil base with sand cap
Placement: Foreground to low midground
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Tank Size: Best in 10 gallons and up

🌱 Allow the runners to spread freely for a natural carpet β€” or trim for neat borders.

🌿 Father Fish Tip:

β€œDon’t overthink it. Let this sword find its own path through the soil β€” it’ll do the work and keep your water in balance.”

Great stuff

Nice size and healthy plant, bit there was lots and lots of duckweed mixes in. It took lots of washing and picking to clear it out. It's prefer not to get duckweed started in my tanks. Overall, decent plants, but I will likely order from a different vendor next time.

Not really in the best condition, lots of snails. Win some, lose some.
